Lexmark X9350

The Lexmark X9350 is a rarity in the MFD (multifunction device) market: it's a carefully thought-out product designed with small-business users in mind. Many MFDs bandy about the all-in-one tag when, in reality, they consist of nothing more than a combined printer and scanner.

In contrast, the X9350 has just about every feature you could need, including an auto-document feeder, memory card slots and a PictBridge port, a fax machine, duplex printing, an ethernet port and both Wi-Fi and Bluetooth for wireless printing.

The device benefits from top-notch build quality. It feels sturdy and robust, with helpful features such as a magazine-style 150-sheet paper input tray and a bright 2in LCD display that flips up for viewing from almost any angle. All these features mean that the X9350 costs considerably more than your average inkjet-based all-in-one, but it's still decent value.

In operation the X9350 is smooth and (for an inkjet) fairly quiet. It's reasonably fast, managing 4ppm (pages per minute) for text in normal mode, stepping up to 9ppm in Quick Print mode. Print quality on plain paper is fine, although the ink runs a little before it dries, giving slightly blurred edges.

An A4 photo on glossy paper took three minutes and 51 seconds to print, and the quality was impressive. The Lexmark isn't up to the standards of professional photo printers, but it's more than good enough for business graphics and family snaps. Scan quality was just as good, with excellent clarity and colour accuracy. And at just 30 seconds for a 360dpi A4 scan, it's fast too.

Good Points

Very easy to install/set up using Wi Fi connection. Took minutes and worked straght away. For an ink jet printer the quality of print is very good. The "quick print" option saves on ink and is adequate if a paper copy for reference is all that is required.

Bad Points

It is large. Poor quality/thin paper is best avoided as it can rip/jam.
