Samsung YP-T9

No ordinary MP3 player, the Samsung YP-T9 opens up a range of possibilities with its Bluetooth facilities. You can listen to your songs on wireless headphones, for instance. Alternatively, a suitably equipped mobile phone can interrupt your music when you get a call.

It would have been nice if Bluetooth headphones were actually included and it's also worth noting that the player won't work with Bluetooth headsets when playing videos or listening to the radio. Nevertheless, the wireless capabilities are a useful extra.

And it helps that the YP-T9 is a rather good MP3 player in its own right. Sleek, black and shiny, this is a stylish-looking gadget, and its design apes that of many of the models in Samsung's mobile phone range. It's slim and light enough to be easily portable, yet the body feels durable. Most of the navigation is carried out using the controls on the front. The buttons on the side are a little too slender, unfortunately, and may take a while to get used to.

Sound quality is impressive, and the incredible screen resolution means clips also appear at a very high quality. The Samsung Media Studio software uses a drag-and-drop method to add media to the device. Video is automatically coded into the SVI format supported by the T9. When you view Mpeg4 video files the screen is automatically set to landscape mode.

The 2GB version of the T9 costs £119, which may seem a little steep given that the 2GB iPod nano retails for less than £100. However, the T9's visual and audio quality and feature set exceed those of the nano.

This device is a breath of fresh air compared with many of the other players on the market. Possibly the biggest selling point is that the T9 is smaller than most of its rivals, but the screen (at 1.8in) is bigger and more impressive.
