Canon Pixma MP460

You can expect to see rather a lot of Canon's 2007 range in future editions of PC Advisor. The MP460 is the latest addition to its line of MFDs (multifunction devices), and its looks are very much of the minute, the curved casing and glossy grey finish making it one of the more attractive MFDs on the market.

The Pixma is also bang up to date in terms of features. Digital camera enthusiasts are well catered for with a PictBridge port, a full complement of memory slots and optional Bluetooth facilities.

Given the price and how new the MP460 is, however, we might have expected Canon to do slightly better on the specifications. The max print resolution of 4,800x1,200 is hardly startling, while the optical scanner resolution is easily matched by the £75 HP Photosmart C3180. The Canon can hold up to 100 sheets of paper, but while the output tray works fairly effectively, it lacks the polished looks of the rest of the MP460.

As a text printer, the Canon works very effectively. Basic speed is good, and although the print is rather faint at the lowest quality settings, it's always legible. On the middle setting it can generate very pleasing text prints at the competitive rate of 6.7ppm (pages per minute), while the slowest setting offers sharp character definition.

However, it's not as impressive on graphics. Colour always seemed faint, and it lacked the depth and realism boasted by the Photosmart C3180.

Scanning facilities were fairly good, however. The comprehensive software suite offers a generous range of features, from fading and graining correction for photos to PDF creation, while the scan quality proved competitive with other models at the £100 price point.
