Kodak EasyShare V610

Although it's clearly one of the more expensive models in the intermediate category, Kodak hopes that strong zoom facilities and intriguing lens technology will give the V610 the lead over cheaper models.

This 6.1Mp (megapixel) camera has a chic design that really stands out. And it's Kodak's second camera to sport two built-in lenses. A 126mm-380mm (35mm equivalent) telephoto zoom lens sits atop a 38mm-114mm standard zoom lens. The standard zoom handles up to 3x magnification; beyond that, the telephoto lens kicks in.

Our outdoor shots usually came out sharp enough, but we got mixed results when shooting in indoor, low-light settings. The V610 sometimes took clear, colourful photos at maximum zoom, but occasionally the camera experienced a few problems with focusing. And as it lacks image stabilisation, any slight movement produced a blurry shot. Pictures were slightly underexposed and white balance was a little off.

On the features side, the V610 impressed us. It offers Bluetooth capabilities, in-camera photo stitching for panoramic shots and a 2.8in LCD. But the battery lasted just 148 shots – a lower number than many point-and-shoot models we've tested recently.

With a long-range 10x optical zoom, the V610 can bring the farthest subjects into full, detailed view. Unfortunately, blurred photos at its highest zoom levels are too frequent.
