Samsung NP-N140 netbook

Verdict

A first glance around the bodywork and through the specs tells us there’s nothing new to see here. But closer examination shows a fractional upgrade in wireless connectivity, along with a step back in usability with the new recessed trackpad buttons. The Samsung N140 is a very good netbook that continues Samsung’s run of higher quality netbooks, but unless 802.11n wireless is essential to you, we’d advise you to also look out for a cheaper and more comfortable NC10 or N110 model.

Good Points
This is a fantastic peice of kit, I won't be lugging around larger laptops anymore! This is a very neat and very portable web book which is exactly as described. There is plenty of room for expansion in the form of USB ports, Bluetooth and wireless connectivity and connects well to available networks and is very easy to configure. The lack of a CDROM to load programs onto the HDD is not an isue, I simply port these into a large file USB stick and load it from there - as a certain Meerkat says "...Shimples..." The smaller HDD is not an issue especially if you strip out the eroneous pre-shipped programmes such as games. I was concerned about system resource usage given the smaller spec compared to other monster laptops around. There are no issues unless you want severl system hungry applications open at at the same time ( See comment re RAM below )
Bad Points
I have no real "Bad Points" but more my observations...... I was very dissapointed that the anti-virus software was McAffee which I cannot abide for so many reasons I could talk a glass eye to sleep about. To add insult to injury it was only a 30 day trial - don't make me laugh! An integrated modem for mobile access would have been great and would have avoided looking for an external USB modem stick. I could have then chosen my provider in the same way as other mobile providers. Offer a higher spec with a 2Gb RAM version to avoid me upgrading it and thereby invalidating the gaurantee in days! Offer a car charger as standard or as an extra. A padded hardbacked case would have been appreciated rather than the neoprene case that was included even though it was appreciated.
