Sony DPP FP95 review

The Sony DPP FP95 is a direct photo printer that looks good, is well-designed and comes with a carry handle to make its 1.2kg weight easier to transport.

As well as being very compact, the Sony DPP FP95 is also easy to use – its huge 3.6in LCD screen is huge for this class of product and adjusts to suit your viewing angle.

Once the Sony DPP FP95 is plugged in, you simply insert the ribbon, paper and memory card (it supports MS, SD, XD and CF cards) and switch it on.

You can use the Sony DPP FP95's screen and navigation buttons to preview images, while the menu button offers access to a range of simple edits including red-eye removal, rotating, reduction and enlargement.

Via the Sony DPP FP95's menu key, you can access more creative edits such as adding frames or superimposing other images and even speech bubbles.

PictBridge capability means you can print directly from a digital camera. The Sony DPP FP95 can also be hooked up to a PC using a USB cable or used with a Bluetooth adaptor to receive images from a mobile phone.

However, we are slightly confused by the HDMI out port. This allows you to look at photos stored on the Sony DPP FP95 in high definition on your TV, but we don't see this as a killer feature.

The Sony DPP FP95 is a dye-sublimination printer, which means colours are layered on to the paper one-by-one and because of its push/pull technique, you need room for the paper at the front and the back. The printer only takes Sony's own 6x4in photo paper, which comes in a pack with sufficient ink and paper for 120 photos and costs £29.

Printing took 42 seconds, within the time claimed. We were impressed with the vivid colours and clear detail.
