HP OfficeJet 6000 review

Product Code: CB051A#BEH

The HP OfficeJet 6000 is one of the bulkier colour inkjet printers we've seen. At 458x389x164mm, it's got quite a large footprint and we weren't completely enamoured with the grey and black casing.

However, the HP OfficeJet 6000 is certainly easy to set-up. Once we'd inserted the print head, it was then simply a case of plugging the device into a power socket, turning it on and inserting the print cartridges and then installing the software. We were then able to connect the printer to our PC using a USB cable, which comes included with the printer.

One of the most impressive aspects of the HP OfficeJet 6000 is the HP Solutions Centre. This can be accessed by double-clicking the icon the HP software installs in your system tray.

Business IT reviews and buying advice

Not only did the Solution Centre offer us an estimated guide to ink levels, ensuring we could order more inks in plenty of time, it also offered access to tools to ensure the printer was working as smoothly as possible.

Cynics might suggest that this works to HP's advantage too, but you also get advice to help you maximise your inks so you don't need to waste any. There's a printhead cleaner and a function that ensures the printheads are aligned. The HP OfficeJet 6000 also uses four different coloured inks, which can be replaced individually when they are running out, which is more cost-effective than having combined colour cartridges.

HP claims the HP OfficeJet 6000 is capable of printing 32 black pages per minutes (ppm) and 31 colour pages per minute in draft. As always take quoted print speeds with a pinch of salt.

Our tests did reveal that it takes 32 seconds to print our two-page graphics and text colour PDF in normal mode.

HP OfficeJet 6000: print quality

Overall we were impressed with the quality of the results using all three of the HP OfficeJet 6000's print settings. In particular we were pleased with the detail in the images on our Draft mode prints and how quiet the printer was, especially in the Best mode. Text is clear and easy to read while the photos enjoy good details and realistic skintones.

HP says the HP OfficeJet 6000 is "energy-efficient, and capable of delivering colour and black-and-white prints at a low cost per page". The OfficeJet 6000 comes with four inks included, while further inks are price at £11.75 each for colour and £15.30 for black.

Based on the calculations we detailed earlier, the cost of black prints are 4p each and colour prints are 15p each. You're unlikely to use this model for much photo printing, however: the paper stock limit is a meagre 90gsm (grammes per square inch). Given that plain fax paper reams are 70gsm or more, this is a paltry amount.
