Samsung R510 review

Product Code: NP-R510-AA01UK

If you're looking for a laptop that you can use for long periods away from the mains, then look no further than this indefatigable Samsung R510.

The Samsung R510 lasted for just over four hours in our MobileMark 2007 battery test, which will last you through a good train journey, even with the inevitable delays.

The Samsung R510 is pretty quick too. A 2GHz Core 2 Duo T5750 and 3GB of DDR2 RAM helped it to grab a decent WorldBench 6 score of 80.

The Samsung R510also has a few treats in its feature set, including an HDMI output for connection to an HDTV, and a spacious 320GB hard drive, which isn't often found in the sub-£500 price bracket.

All the usual standard features you could want are provided too, including an 802.11b/g WiFi card, a dual-layer DVD burner, an SD card slot, a 56K modem and an ethernet port. Three USB 2.0 ports are included as well; one on the side for easy access and two more on the back of the Samsung R510.

The Samsung R510 looks good for the money, with its shiny black lid and classy silver and black. The lid feels solid, although the hinges aren't particularly tight - lift up the laptop and the lid starts closing. Meanwhile, typing on the keyboard feels natural, with a solid key-press mechanism.

It's not all good news, though. Disappointingly, there's no FireWire connection or S-Video output and the screen isn't amazing either. That's not to say that the Samsung R510has a bad screen; it's bright and sharp, but looks a bit washed out in comparison with some.
