London 2012 Official Results App review

Manufacturer: London 2012

Our Rating: We rate this 4.5 out of 5

The London 2012 Official Results App is the official app for the London 2012 Olympic Games. It puts all the Olympic news, schedules and results in a single place, easily accessible from your iPhone, iPad or Android smartphone or tablet. Read our full review to find out more.

The London 2012 Official Results App is the official app for the London 2012 Olympic Games. It puts all the Olympic news, schedules and results in a single place, easily accessible from your iPhone, iPad or Android smartphone or tablet. We tested the app on a smartphone running Android Gingerbread. See also: London 2012: Official Join In app review.

We're still some 18 days from the first Olympic event, so clicking the app's Live button merely produces a countdown timer to that competition - Great Britain vs New Zealand Women's Football, according to the app. Eventually, though, this section will let you view London 2012 results, news, photos and social commentary in real time. A second button, Schedule & Results, lets you view on a calendar any Olympic events taking place on a particular day between 25 July and 12 August. Morning, lunchtime, afternoon and evening events are grouped by type; click on any of these to view individual events. An alarm clock icon to the left adds the item to your Favourites and acts as a reminder. See also: Android Advisor.

Third up is Sports, which lists all the various sporting activities for which Olympic athletes will compete. Select a sport to view a list of competitions in that category, news, photos (when available) and various other information covering, for example, the venue and the rules for that particular competition. Tapping the star next to an event should add it to your Favourites list, although we struggled to accomplish this on our Sony Ericsson Xperia Arc. See also: Best Android Apps.

A Medals button will reveal the individual event winners, which can be filtered by person and sport. The Athletes section is also awaiting completion; a Featured tab offers in-depth information on the likes of Paul Elvstrom, Steve Redgrave, Mia Hamm, Teresa Edwards and Mark Spitz, but London 2012 athletes sorted by country or sport are not available at present. My Games is the final button, and brings up various news and medal winners for your home country. You can quickly access more details on the sports you starred as Favourites, while a Reminders tab brings up any events for which you tapped the alarm clock icon to set a reminder. The final tab is a link to a London 2012 online shop where you can buy Olympic Games merchandise.

The London 2012 Results App lists several permissions in the Android version, most notably the ability to start at boot. This means it could slow your handset's startup time and general performance, and put a drain on the battery. This can't be switched off in the app's settings, so consider using a task manager to kill the app if its impact is measurable.

Push notifications are also supported by the London 2012 Results App, allowing you to receive alerts with daily summaries for the top countries or your home country, plus news of any medals won by your country. These are off by default; visit the Settings menu to switch on push notifications.

A companion app, London 2012 Official Join In App, is a useful guide for ticket holders, enabling them to plan, enjoy and share their experience of the London 2012 Olympic Games and Paralympic Games. Note that both apps are available only in English, however.

  • Overall: We give this item 9 of 10 overall

For those who will eagerly follow the London 2012 Olympic Games, the London 2012 Results App should prove a very useful tool. It isn't totally ready yet but, by the time the games begin, it should put at your fingertips all the information you need - provided that you speak English, of course. If you have tickets for the games, also check out the London 2012 Join In App.
