Moshi iVisor XT screen protector review

Sick of struggling to apply fiddly screen protectors to your smartphone or tablet? The iVisor XT is different: it's quick and easy to fit, has no bubbles and can be removed, washed and reused. Here's our review of the iVisor XT. See all Mobile phone accessories.

Most screen protectors are single-use and stick to the entire surface of your screen. This makes it hard to avoid bubbles and trapped dust. The iVisor XT is different. It's quick and easy to fit and, because the adhesive is around the edges, there are no bubbles. Take a look at Zerochroma Vario Clear iPhone 5 case review.

Thanks to a 'polymer adhesive' the iVisor can be removed, washed under a tap and reapplied many times, so that high price becomes better value. See also North Face gloves for iPhone and Android users review.

Moshi makes the iVisor XT for various devices including the iPhone 4S, 5 and iPad 2, 3 and 4. You'll also find them for popular Android phones, such as the Galaxy S3.

Take the iPhone 5 protector, for example. It has a black or white surround (make sure you order the right colour for your phone) which matches the colour of the phone's bezel underneath, with cutouts for the Home button, speaker and camera.

You get a small cloth to clean your phone's screen to remove all dust, dirt and grease. Once that's done, you peel the backing paper off the iVisor XT and apply it from the bottom to the top.

It took us a couple of tries to align it perfectly, but once done, it looked as though there was no protector at all. The only giveaway is the cutout at the top.

As the iVisor is around twice as thick as a normal screen protector, the Home button feels noticeably more recessed. Any tight-fitting cases which partially cover the front may cause problems, but most clip-on cases should work fine with the iVisor XT.

We were impressed with the smoothness of the iVisor - your fingers glide across it just like the iPhone's screen. There's no loss of sensitivity either and - from our tests so far - it appears to be more scratch resistant than some screen protectors we've used.

The only slight problem is an oil-slick effect in the centre of the screen where the protector touches the screen underneath. Moshi mentions this in the manual, and says it's only visible when the screen is off, but we could still see it on occasion with the screen on. Whether it's noticeable or not depends on the lighting - indoors you can see it much more easily than outdoors, as the photos show.

Also, the more eagle-eyed will spot the 'micro-grid' of dots across the whole screen. This is to ensure better touch sensitivity, and we didn't notice it during normal use.

Bear in mind, too, that the iVisor XT has a glossy finish, so if you're after a matt protector to avoid reflections, look elsewhere.

Moshi iVisor XT screen protector Expert Verdict »

100% bubble free guaranteed
High transparency
iVisor can be cleaned and reapplied
Hardened surface treatment for enhanced scratch protection
  • Overall: We give this item 8 of 10 overall

Although expensive compared to traditional screen protectors, the iVisor XT is reusable. It's a shame about the sometimes-visible oil-slick effect, but this is still the best screen protector we've used so far.
