The Hauppauge WinTV-HVR-4000 is a PCI-based quad-mode TV tuner – quad in the sense that it can handle DBB-S2 HD satellite, DVB-S digital satellite, DVB-T Freeview and analogue cable. The Hauppauge WinTV-HVR-4000 can also receive teletext, FM radio and video via S-video and composite inputs.
The big thing about the Hauppauge WinTV-HVR-4000 is its HD (high-definition) capabilities. If you have a dish, it can pick up free-to-air HD programming – in other words, not a lot at present. You can then record DVB-S2 programmes to disk in the original H.264 format. DiSEqC 1.0 is also supported, allowing you to switch between four satellite sources.
The Hauppauge WinTV-HVR-4000 is designed to drive a TV-sized display, but you don’t need a PC running XP Media Center Edition to do it justice. The Hauppauge WinTV-HVR-4000 comes complete with CyberLink’s PowerCinema 4.7, which gives you a good facsimile of Media Center – using the supplied remote gives you full control from your couch, including interactive services. And, of course, you can do all the normal PVR things such as time-shift, pause and schedule recordings.
