Acer TravelMate 6292 Intel Santa Rosa laptop

£1,029 inc VAT

Manufacturer: Acer

Our Rating: We rate this 3.5 out of 5

The Acer TravelMate 6292 isn't as stylish as the latest Aspire from Acer (click here for PC Advisor's Acer Aspire 5920 Intel Santa Rosa Laptop review), but as its emphasis is on performance and portability, this isn't a major problem.

The new look, which Acer calls its ProFile design, is less extravagant. It feels durable and, according to Acer, the Acer TravelMate 6292's magnesium alloy cover makes it 20 times stronger. Even though well-built, the lid lacks clasps and so is prone to opening easily.

Despite this niggle, we reckon Acer has got it spot on with the size and weight of the Acer TravelMate 6292 as it could be easily carried – making it ideal for the business professional.

Battery life isn't the best, although the 107 minutes scored in our tests is adequate. And the WorldBench real-world speed benchmark total of 75 proved that the Acer TravelMate 6292 has the power to cope well with running multiple applications, even if there are faster models out there.

The Acer TravelMate 6292 does lean far more towards professional use than games or multimedia users – the games score of 10fps is a poor showing for the graphics controller, while the lack of Dolby Home Theatre Virtual Surround Sound (featured on the Aspire) makes the Acer TravelMate 6292 less than ideal for watching movies. As for a webcam, the Crystal Eye will prove useful for video conferencing.

At 12.1in, the Acer TravelMate 6292's screen is small, making the laptop nearly ultra-portable size. But it does at least offer a resolution of 1,280x800, and we were impressed with the overall crispness of the images.

As with the Acer Aspire 5920, which also boasts the new Santa Rosa technology, the Acer TravelMate 6292 is able to connect to not only a, b and g wireless networks but draft n, which can increase wireless speeds by up to five times.

Even though Acer's Acer TravelMate 6292 doesn't look as sophisticated as the most recent Aspire, it's perfectly suited to business users or those needing a lightweight, durable and highly portable option. The draft n connectivity is useful, and the Acer TravelMate 6292 offers plenty of power and a high level of performance. Interested in hot new laptops?
