Samsung R70 Intel Santa Rosa laptop

£700 inc VAT

Manufacturer: Samsung

Our Rating: We rate this 3.5 out of 5

At first glance, Samsung's R70 looks similar to the Samsung R20, sporting a slimline design and polished black outer casing. Although the Samsung R70's shiny surface is undoubtedly stylish, it does smear, a feature we've noticed in some of Samsung's other notebooks.

The Samsung R70's trackpad and decent sized keyboard are comfortable and user friendly. The Samsung R70 is also slightly larger and heavier than the R20 but this is understandable as it is better featured, with additions such as a 1.3Mp digital motion camera. However, as the Samsung R70 is £200 more expensive than the R20, we expected it to include a greater number of hot keys and more than three USB ports.

The Samsung R70's 1.8GHz Intel Core 2 Duo T7100 makes running multiple applications on the R70 easy. Although a greater amount of memory would have made the specification more attractive, the 1GB DDR RAM it offers is acceptable at this price.

The Samsung R70's dual core processor also means it performed well in our WorldBench 6 speed tests, notching up a score of 68. This is in the same range as many laptops around the £800 price bracket. The Samsung R70 also performed slightly better in our gaming tests than the Hi-Grade D7000SR , despite that laptop costing over £200 more and having an identical graphics system. The display of the Samsung R70's glossy screen was of a high quality, with deep colours and an impressive level of contrast.

The full suite of Samsung's software and Cyberlink DVD are included and the one quick access button that features on the Samsung R70 sends you directly to Samsung's AV Station Now. The Samsung R70 has plenty of connectivity, supporting a, b and g wireless networks, and it also has Bluetooth capabilities. However, the Samsung R70 doesn't provide several Santa Rosa features, such as draft n connection or Turbo Memory.

At 110 minutes, the battery life of the R70 was about the same as the more expensive Samsung Q35 we tested. As the Samsung R70 features Santa Rosa technology, which aims to conserve power and prolong battery life, we put its relatively strong performance down to this.

For a budget priced notebook, the Samsung R70 looks smart. Well featured due to its motion camera and large hard drive, the Samsung R70 is also easy to use and powerful. Battery life was good, and its WorldBench scores put it on par with many laptops costing considerably more. See also: Acer Aspire 5920 Intel Santa Rosa Laptop review

The second Intel Santa Rosa notebook we've seen, the Hi-Grade D7000SR demonstrates some of the benefits of Intel’s latest processor platform. The Hi-Grade D7000SR is not cheap, but this high asking price is partly justified by excellent Windows performance.
