£1,001+ PCs chart: Mesh Elite Q6600 PCA

£1,299 inc VAT

Manufacturer: Mesh

Our Rating: We rate this 3.5 out of 5

Fourth place probably doesn't do justice the Mesh Elite Q6600 PCA. A PC that, depending on whether you're looking to the future or the present, could yet be the best buy of any of these machines.

Fourth place

Fourth place probably doesn't do justice to a PC that, depending on whether you're looking to the future or the present, could yet be the best buy of any of these machines. The real dilemma stems from the Mesh's use of the 2.4GHz Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 chip. This quad-core chip promises excellent speed with multi-threaded multi-core applications - you could easily see performance increase of 50 to 100% with the right software. Unfortunately, multi-threaded applications are still pretty thin on the ground. Very thin, in fact, and on today's programs, the results are less stellar. The WorldBench score is very decent, but it's several points short of being the highest in the chart.

You will also have to put up with the 22in Iiyama flat-panel. Vast this screen may be, but the colour quality isn't as sparkling as we'd like it to be, while the focus is also slightly dubious. Nonetheless, if you like plenty of viewing area then you might find it possible to look past these faults. For our money, we'd rather have an excellent screen like the 20in Samsung.

The Mesh's 640MB GeForce 8800 GTS graphics card is very decent, if not quite the equal of the CyberPower's ATI HD 2900 XT. And there are plenty of juicy extras (such as a TV tuner) and a fairly strong warranty. For today's programs, the Mesh isn't the fastest here. However, if you have one eye on the future, you might find the Quad-Core technology something of a killer blow.

£1,001+ PCs chart: Mesh Elite E6700 GTS PCA

The Mesh Elite E6700 GTS PCA sees Mesh returning to more predictable territory - with some very pleasing results. In fact, as an overall exhibition of features and components, the Elite E6700 puts on quite a show.

£1,001+ PCs chart: Arbico CD8800 XL

The Arbico may have slipped to second but, in truth, it was an extremely close call. Given the extra quality of the Samsung flat-panel, we rate the CyberPower as a fantastic overall deal with no weak areas whatsoever.

Quad-core technology continues to cause us a dilemma. We’re promised that the age of multi-core chips is almost upon us and that quad-core will soon be able to show its true worth. However, until this time, the likes of the Mesh Pulse SLI will continue to trail behind the E6750 and E6850 machines.

We're trying to find fault with the CyberPower Infinity Crossfire GT but, as an overall experience, it really is as a good as PC gets.
