Bulky but still portable, Toshiba's Satellite A100-062 sports a grey outer casing that's susceptible to scratches but, once opened, it looks the part.
However, we found its sunken trackpad odd to use initially and a little small considering the size of the laptop. The extra space beside the trackpad would have been put to better use by adding more quick access buttons, or just making it larger.
The Toshiba Satellite A100-062's 15.4in TruBrite WXGA TFT display has a standard resolution of 1,280x800. We found the screen easily visible at different angles, but colours weren't as bright as those of the other models in this price range. And the Toshiba Satellite A100-062 is not a very responsive system, struggling in our gaming tests.
The Toshiba Satellite A100-062's paltry 4fps score in our Fear test was only to be expected; the Toshiba Satellite A100-062 relies upon the sickly integrated Mobile Intel 945GM Express chipset for its graphics display.
Toshiba provides the standard 80GB hard drive and a solid 1GB of DDR2 RAM.
The Toshiba Satellite A100-062 is driven by a powerful 1.66GHz Intel Core 2 Duo T5200 processor, which earned an impressive 60 WorldBench speed points in our benchmarking tests. Vista Home Premium is preinstalled and the reasonable software selection includes Toshiba Disc Creator and Ulead's DVD MovieWriter. A multimedia bar offers a range of hotkeys and the shortcut buttons that appear when the mouse is moved to the top of the screen are practical, corresponding to the function keys, the Esc key and the spacebar.
The Toshiba Satellite A100-062 supports a, b and g wireless networks, while a handy switch on the side activates wireless LAN. The Toshiba Satellite A100-062 features a six-in-one card reader, four USB ports and a TV-out socket. However its feature list is minimal and would have been enhanced by a webcam or Bluetooth.
- WorldBench 6 benchmark score: 60
