At £930, the Computer Planet F2000 Family PC is on the expensive side for a family PC. Featuring a 3.4 GHz Intel Core i5-3570 processor fitted with a quiet Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 Pro cooler, however, it delivers plenty of performance for serious applications as well as casual family fun. Its 2TB Seagate hard drive offers twice the capacity of most offerings and a 120GB Corsair Force GT SSD ensures excellent system responsiveness, with enough storage space for your most frequently-used applications. See also: Chillblast Fusion Commando review and Braebo Aphrodite review.
In our lab tests the Computer Planet F2000 Family PC scored very well, achieving 6,134 points from PCMark 7 and showing that its 3rd-generation processor can still go head-to-head with the new Haswell chips without embarrassment.
Computer Planet F2000 Family PC: graphics performance
The true strength of this system was in its graphics performance. By fitting an nVidia GeForce GTC 660 card with 2GB video memory, Computer Planet has provided a PC that can be used for gaming as well as general family computing.
Actual performance gains will depend to a large extent on what settings you use, and our benchmark results show large improvements in some tests and little or none in others.
Despite its strong performance, we found the F2000 to be lacking in other areas. Notably, the Cooler Master Elite 335U system case is inferior to the CM Force 500 used in competing systems. The lack of cable management results in a messy interior. Externally however, the system looks reasonably smart and tidy, and incorporates a handy multi-format card reader. Notably absent though is a Blu-ray drive, all the more surprising given the higher price.
The Computer Planet F2000 Family PC comes with a 23.6in Iiyama X2377 IPS monitor, the same model supplied by Chillblast, but no external speakers are provided.
Full versions of Webroot 2013, PowerDVD 10 and Nero 10 are included and Computer Planet provides unlimited phone, email and online live chat support. The first year of the two-year warranty is provided on a collect-and-return basis which reverts to RTB thereafter. See also: Group test: What's the best family PC?
