Toshiba Satellite L630-13M review

Manufacturer: Toshiba

Our Rating: We rate this 3.5 out of 5

Toshiba’s 13.3in screen Satellite L630-13M is a highly portable laptop that will suit both style-conscious consumers and business users.

Toshiba’s 13.3in screen Satellite L630-13M is a highly portable laptop that will suit both style-conscious consumers and business users.

Toshiba’s 13.3in screen Satellite L630-13M is a highly portable laptop that retains the same 1366x768 resolution as 15.6in-screen models. You do miss out on a numeric keypad and a little wrist space, however.

Finished in black throughout, the good-looking Toshiba Satellite L630-13M laptop will suit both style-conscious consumers and business users. A subtle swirling pattern continues from the lid through to the interior.

If you’re looking for a small laptop in this price range, then you’re bound to compare this laptop to HP’s same-price Pavilion dm3-1105ea. Although the HP is more stylish than the Toshiba Satellite L630-13M, this laptop comes with a DVD burner built-in and weighs less than the combined weight of the HP laptop and its external DVD drive.

Its 1.8GHz Intel Pentium P6000 is also more powerful than the HP’s Celeron processor, but it draws somewhat more power. The Toshiba Satellite L630-13M laptop lasted 4 hours 39 minutes in our MobileMark 2007 Productivity test, versus the HP’s 5 hrs 39 mins.

On the flip side, its 86-point score in our WorldBench 6 performance test was considerably better than the HP’s 65. Even so, the Toshiba Satellite L630-13M's performance is some way behind Core i3- and Core i5–based laptops.

The Toshiba Satellite L630-13M's processor also features integrated graphics, allowing it to achieve 13fps in our Fear games test at ‘Maximum’ settings and a playable 38fps at ‘Medium’ detail. The HP laptop, meanwhile, scored unplayable framerates of 6fps and 19fps respectively.

Three USB ports are available (one doubles as an eSATA port), along with a card reader and VGA and HDMI outputs. The Toshiba Satellite L630-13M laptop also comes with a 500GB hard drive, 3GB of RAM, Bluetooth and 802.11b/g/n Wi-Fi.

A truly portable laptop, the Toshiba Satellite L630-13M isn’t as attractive as the same-price HP but offers a DVD drive built-in, a lighter combined weight, better Windows performance and integrated graphics.

    Toshiba Satellite L300-13R

At first glance, Toshiba's Satellite L300-13R appears a superior machine to the Acer Aspire 5920 Gemstone, as its silver and black insides look much classier than the Acer's white keyboard and blue LED overload.

    Toshiba Satellite A660-15T

At first glance, the Toshiba Satellite A660-15T looks like a one of Toshiba's typical business laptops. It's not shiny, pretty or finished with silver trim – it's matt black on matt black with a bit of subtle texturing, which we suspect is there more for grip than appearance.
