The HP Pavilion dv9695ea is a fine laptop for both work and play. Its large, widescreen display and speedy processor make it great for both spreadsheets and movies.

HP has packed in a 2.2GHz Intel Core 2 Due T7500 processor into the HP Pavilion dv9695ea and slammed in a whopping 4GB of RAM, allowing the dv9695ea to achieve very impressive WorldBench 6 real-world speed score of 88.

Similarly, the nVidia GeForce 8400M GS graphics chip helped the HP Pavilion dv9695ea score an incredible 22 frames per second (fps) in our taxing graphics tests.

Battery life is a secondary concern on a model of this size, yet the HP Pavilion dv9695ea still managed to achieve a half-respectable performance of an hour and 35 mins on a single charge.

While the HP Pavilion dv9695ea is perfectly adequate for office tasks, entertainment is where it really starts to shine. HP has included an HD-DVD drive, so you can play high-definition films. Stashed inside the ExpressCard slot is a remote control.

The glossy 17in display offers vibrant colours, although at the expense of increased reflectivity. Unfortunately the HP Pavilion dv9695ea doesn't stretch to the 1,920x1,080 resolution necessary for full 1080p HD content, instead topping out at 1,440x900 pixels.

If you believe that all work and no play is a bad thing, then the designers of the HP Pavilion dv9695ea would appear to agree. While it won't have a problem with menial office tasks, it's gaming and multimedia where the HP Pavilion dv9695ea excels, with impressive performance. The lack of resolution support for 1080p HD material is a disappointment, though.
