If you like the idea of an ultraportable laptop, but find their keyboards impracticably small, the Fujitsu-Siemens Lifebook S6410 could be just what you're looking for.

The Fujitsu-Siemens Lifebook S6410 packs in a 13.3in screen and decent sized keyboard into a case measuring just 314x234x32mm (WxDxH). However, Fujitsu Siemens has managed to keep the weight to just 1.75kg.

Inside the Fujitsu-Siemens Lifebook S6410 has a 2GHz Intel Core 2 Duo T7300 processor and 1GB of RAM, allowing it to achieve a respectable WorldBench 6 score of 68.

This is no games machine, however: the Fujitsu-Siemens Lifebook S6410's Intel X3100 graphics chip scored a pathetic 3 frames per second (fps) in our gruelling graphics test. Battery performance was better, managing to keep going for an hour and 55 minutes on a single charge.

The 13.3in screen has a glossy finish – as with all such models, only you can decide whether you prefer this or a less reflective design. The Fujitsu-Siemens Lifebook S6410's 1,280x800-resolution display looks good with the enhanced colour reproduction this enables.

Storage-wise, the Fujitsu-Siemens Lifebook S6410's 80GB drive is rather stingy, especially given the considerable memory requirements of Windows Vista. It also makes the Lifebook seem fairly poor value in comparison with models such as the far cheaper and twice as capacious Hi-Grade.

The Fujitsu-Siemens Lifebook S6410 includes a fairly average three USB ports. These are all located on the righthand side, which dictates how peripherals can be attached. We didn’t find the Lifebook’s design inspiring but as the inclusion of Windows Vista Business implies, this is a laptop designed for workaday use.

The Fujitsu-Siemens Lifebook S6410's USB ports are all on the righthand side, although one is situated towards the rear of the machine with the other two at the front, this doesn't allow much flexibility when plugging in peripherals.

If you find proper ultraportables too small, but want something light and compact to take with you on the road, the Fujitsu-Siemens Lifebook S6410 is a good compromise. It offers decent performance and reasonable battery life. It's not the prettiest machine available, but it should be fairly dependable and it's got a nice personality.
