Acer Aspire Gemstone 2920 ultraportable laptop

£599 inc VAT

Manufacturer: Acer

Our Rating: We rate this 3.5 out of 5

The Acer Aspire Gemstone 2920 would make a good travel companion if you need something to take with you while you're on the go.

The Acer Aspire Gemstone 2920 would make a good travel companion if you need something to take with you while you're on the go.

It has a small footprint at only 304x223mm, making it easy to slip into a bag, but at 42mm high it's not exactly slimline. At 2kg, nor is the Acer Aspire Gemstone 2920 the lightest of models given that it's supposedly an ultraportable.

However, the Acer Aspire Gemstone 2920's compact dimensions hide a laptop that is actually pretty powerful when it comes to performance. The 2GHz Intel Core 2 Duo T7300 chip is matched by 2GB of RAM, resulting in an astounding WorldBench 6 real-world speed score of 79 for a machine of this size.

Gaming performance was less impressive, with the Acer Aspire Gemstone 2920's Intel X3100 graphics chipset managing only a pitiful 4 frames per second (fps) in our graphics tests.

The Acer Aspire Gemstone 2920 is well equipped when it comes to storage, packing in a 250GB hard drive and DVD writer.

There's space for only a 12.1in display, but it stretches to a resolution of 1,280x800 so the Acer Aspire Gemstone 2920 offers a decent amount of desktop space to work on. The glossy panel also offers vibrant colour reproduction, if at the expense of increased reflectivity.

In terms of design, the Acer Aspire Gemstone 2920 is a bit of a mismatch. When closed, the dark lit and curved edges look sleek and refined, but open it up and its expanse of dirty internal grey plastic finish and touches of seethrough emerald green just make it look a bit tacky.

With little extra space to play with, Acer has squeezed in the bare minimum ports necessary, but you still get three USB ports, which are sensibly arranged with two on the left and one on the right of the Acer Aspire Gemstone 2920 - so if you're plugging in a USB mouse you don't need to wrap the cable around the back of the machine.

Despite packing an incredible amount of power into such a small space, the Acer Aspire Gemstone 2920 isn't exorbitantly priced, coming just under the £600 mark.

A battery life of 105 minutes is reasonable.

The Acer Aspire Gemstone 2920 would be suitable if you spend a lot of time on the road and need a machine to carry with you everywhere you go. It's powerful, provided you don't intend to play games and it's reasonably priced if you can put up with its lack lustre looks.
