Gainward BLISS GeForce 8800 GTX graphics card

£312 inc VAT

Manufacturer: Gainward

Our Rating: We rate this 3.5 out of 5

Technically, the GeForce 8800 Ultra is the most powerful graphics card you can buy - but it is tricky to source. As a consequence, the fastest card you can lay your hands on may be the Gainward BLISS GeForce 8800 GTX.

Technically, the GeForce 8800 Ultra is the most powerful graphics card you can buy - but it is tricky to source. As a consequence, the fastest card you can lay your hands on may be the Gainward BLISS GeForce 8800 GTX.

More surprising still is how little the Gainward BLISS GeForce 8800 GTX has come down in price – it's still floating some way above the £300 mark.

However, nothing can take away from the fact that the Gainward BLISS GeForce 8800 GTX remains an extremely powerful card.

Compared to the Radeon 3870 XT, the core and memory clock speeds no longer seem so impressive. But factor in the 384bit memory interface, and the Gainward BLISS GeForce 8800 GTX's memory bandwidth soars to an eye-watering 86.4 gigabytes per second (GBps) – some way clear of even the 3870 XT'sfigure of 72GBps.

You get a hefty 768MB of DDR3 RAM, which gives the Gainward BLISS GeForce 8800 GTX plenty of elbow room when it comes to intense gaming titles such as Crysis and Bioshock.

It remains to be seen whether the Gainward BLISS GeForce 8800 GTX's support for DirectX 10.1 ever amounts to anything. Suffice to say that, in today's games market, we've yet to see a graphics card that can do more to show off DirectX 10 in all its glory than this fantastic card.

That fact becomes especially true when you switch on the Gainward BLISS GeForce 8800 GTX's brand new Coverage Sampled Anti-Aliasing (CSAA) feature. All round, the Gainward BLISS GeForce 8800 GTX is a quite gorgeous graphics card.

You have to question how much value for money the Gainward BLISS GeForce 8800 GTX offers over the still very sprightly 8800 GT. The fact is, unless you're going to be running at obscene resolutions and with hefty amounts of detail, the GT is actually a much better deal.
