Evesham Oxegen CRX88 power desktop PC

£1,174 inc VAT

Manufacturer: Evesham

Our Rating: We rate this 3.5 out of 5

Like the Chillblast Fusion Terminator and CyberPower Gamer Infinity Quad GT, the Evesham Oxegen CRX88 is a PC that should age well. This quad-core machine will only start to excel when faced with a software library of true multithreaded titles.

Like the Chillblast Fusion Terminator and CyberPower Gamer Infinity Quad GT, the Evesham Oxegen CRX88 is a PC that should age well. This quad-core machine will only start to excel when faced with a software library of true multithreaded titles.

Of course, that time has yet to come, and estimates vary as to just how good multicore chips will be in the future. Nonetheless, in today’s environment, the Evesham Oxegen CRX88 is slightly off the pace, while the performance of the third- and fourth-placed PCs offer tempting alternatives for quad-core fans.

The main difference between this machine and the quad-core Chillblast Fusion Terminator is the graphics sub-system. While both the Chillblast Fusion Terminator and CyberPower Gamer Infinity Quad GT have exciting 8800 GTX and dual-GT line-ups, the Evesham Oxegen CRX88 is restricted to a single 8800 GT. This lacks the firepower needed to compete with the other systems.

But that’s not to say that the Evesham Oxegen CRX88 isn’t otherwise well-equipped. The sound system is very good, as is the 500GB hard drive, while the Samsung DVD writer is pretty much the best on the market. The Evesham Oxegen CRX88 also has much the best software bundle. Unfortunately, with so many top-notch PC systems occupying the places ahead of it, the Evesham Oxegen CRX88 struggles to mark itself out as an inspiring option.

  • Arbico Elite 8800GT SLI power desktop PC

Arbico Elite 8800GT SLI power desktop PC

We take value for money seriously, and an attractive price tag has allowed many a system to edge past a closely matched rival in our charts. Arbico’s PCs are a case in point, wearing their budget tags as badges of honour. But when there’s just £50 separating five PCs in our Test Centre, money becomes less significant.

  • Evesham Oxegen RD1500 power desktop PC

Evesham Oxegen RD1500 power desktop PC

While there is very little to distinguish the top three PCs and the fourth-placed Arbico QC2900 XT has one eye on the future, the Evesham Oxegen RD1500 is further behind.

  • Chillblast Fusion Terminator power desktop PC

Chillblast Fusion Terminator power desktop PC

Not so long ago, to be the only PC in the chart with an 8800 GTX graphics card almost guaranteed superiority in our games tests. However, Mesh, Arbico and CyberPower have been quick to realise that two 8800 GTs are a lethal match for a single 8800 GTX. SLI performance can be erratic but, in many of today’s games, the Chillblast Fusion Terminator can’t keep up with the dual-GT systems. Combine this with a price tag that’s some £49 higher than that of the Arbico Elite 8800GT SLI, and you’ll see why the Chillblast Fusion Terminator makes do with fourth place.

    Evesham Solar CR88 desktop PC

Around £1,000 is a reasonable price to find PCs with a spectacular string of components without breaking the bank. The Evesham Solar CR88 hits the cash register at just £949, making it a decent – although certainly not an unbeatable – PC for the money.

  • Mesh G92 Titan power desktop PC

Mesh G92 Titan power desktop PC

After an unfortunate false start in the December issue, this particular Mesh is now available to buy in the form of the G92 Titan. And that’s cause for celebration, since this is quite a machine.
