Zoostorm 52-4201 laptop PC

£480 inc VAT

Manufacturer: PCNextDay

Our Rating: We rate this 4 out of 5

Not all Zoostorm products stand out from the crowd and it’s fair to say that the Zoostorm 52-4201 is no trailblazer, but this Intel Santa Rosa laptop is certainly worth a look.

The laptop market is a competitive one, but Zoostorm does a bang-up job of putting together laptops and desktop PCs that offer high specifications and good performance while still managing to undercut many other manufacturers. Not all its products stand out from the crowd and it’s fair to say that the Zoostorm 52-4201 is no trailblazer, but this Intel Santa Rosa laptop is certainly worth a look.

What you don’t necessarily get with a low-cost laptop like this one is style and the Zoostorm 52-4201 is not the most thrilling to behold, but its metallic silver casing is attractive enough and this laptop is fairly sturdily built.

As 15.4in screen laptops go, it’s also pretty portable: the Zoostorm 52-4201 weighs a not unreasonable 2.7kg and is a slimmish 3.7cm deep. We were also pleased to find this 1.8GHz Intel Core 2 Duo laptop is well-hinged. You don’t feel as though you’ll break it by pushing back the lid too far, which is a complaint we have about some smaller laptops.

The Zoostorm 52-4201‘s trackpad is sticky to use, however, and your finger has to move slowly in order for it to respond. It also doesn’t feature a scrolling panel and the buttons below it are small and a little cheap looking. The keyboard is more sensibly sized, making it comfortable and easy to use. Better use of the space around the keyboard could have been made by including some quick access buttons along with media playback or volume controls. The speakers are also small for a laptop of average size and we found the Zoostorm 52-4201’s sound quality a bit tinny.

Extras are thin on the ground: there’s no webcam and only three types of removable media card can be used: Secure Digital, MMC or Memory Stick. However, you do get Bluetooth as well as all three wireless flavours and plenty of USB ports with the Zoostorm 52-4201.

For a £480 laptop, we really shouldn’t grumble at the lack of anything to make this 15.4in Zoostorm 52-4201 stand out from the crowd. Its 1.8GHz T7100 processor and 1GB RAM combined to pull in a decent 66 WorldBench points and Zoostorm provides 120GB hard disk on which to store files.
