The Sony MDR-AS50G headphones have a design element that can divide opinion: a semi-rigid loop that sits behind your neck and holds the earphones in your ears. The quality of fit helps with audio quality too, even if these unsurprisingly can’t compete with high-end audiophile models. There isn’t a massive oomph to the sound, but it’s warm and clear, and coped easily with the pop and gentler rock acts we threw at it.

We liked the lack of sound leakage, but there’s no on-cable remote. Our only real reservations concern robustness: while the headphones themselves are sturdy, the cable is thin and feels like a potential long-term vulnerability.
