Logic3 i-Station Combo review

RRP £99 inc VAT

Manufacturer: Logic3

Our Rating: We rate this 3.5 out of 5

As iPod and iPhone docks go, the Logic3 i-Station Combo is a relatively affordable gadget.

As iPod and iPhone docks go, the Logic3 i-Station Combo is a relatively affordable gadget - it has an RRP of £99, but is available for £79 from Logic3's website, and could be had for just £44 from Amazon UK at the time of writing. Its glossy black plastic casing with red trim does little to hide its budget roots, but its feature list tries harder.

The i-Station can be wall-mounted to save space or placed on a desk; Logic3 provides detachable plastic stands for the main unit and each of its two speakers. It's easy to set up, and 1.5m cables let you place the speakers some distance apart. Combined with its large LCD screen, FM radio and clock with sleep/timer function, this makes the unit ideal for sitting on a bedside table. Less impressively, the clock loses its settings when the mains power source is removed - let's hope you don't have a power cut the night before an important business presentation.

Also in the box is a handy lightweight remote control, allowing you to control playback from the sofa. Each of its functions are duplicated by rather stiff buttons on the top and front face of the i-Station Combo. However, with nowhere in the casing to stow away the remote when not in use, you'll need to watch it doesn't get lost.

A standard 3.5mm line-in lets you use the Logic3 with other portable players as well as the iPhone and iPod, and a protective cover is provided for when the dock isn't in use. Handily, it'll juice up your player in the process. There's also a Composite output, allowing you to hook up the i-Station Combo to a TV and watch video stored on your device. Note, though, that it isn't magnetically shielded, so don't wall-mount it too close to the TV. No output is available for use with a pair of headphones, although you could easily undock the player and use it with its own set.

The i-Station Combo also includes a CD player, which lets you configure a playlist consisting of up to 20 tracks, although we admit to having to glance over the instructions before we could get it to play a disc.

The sound quality is good at this price, and the volume level is perfectly usable, but this 2.0-channel set lacks bass.

The Logic3 is entirely mains-powered, limiting its portability.

It's relatively cheap and multifunctional, but the Logic3 i-Station Combo isn't without its faults. Ideal for use as a bedside-table alarm clock, provided you don't experience a power cut in the middle of the night.
