Undercover 5 is a tool that enables you to track any Mac you have registered with the service. When we last reviewed the program, Apple’s own Find my Mac feature in iCloud had not yet gone live. How does Undercover stack up? See Best iPhone and Android apps.
The differences are more pronounced than you might think. While Find my Mac accurately geo-locates your machine on a live map, just like Undercover, that’s more or less it. You can use other Mac tools to connect to the machine or remotely access it. Undercover 5 has all those features built in and more. See also iPad review
For example, you can grab screenshots from your Mac, log key strokes (enabling you to capture the thief’s personal data) and even use the Mac’s iSight camera to take pictures of the perp using your computer. See also: iPhone 5 review.
Undercover 5 has a revamped web interface that makes all these features easier to access and use. In addition, the location feature has been updated so you can now not only track you Mac’s current whereabouts, but scroll through a timeline of its movements. See all Mac App reviews.
One of Undercover’s most powerful selling points is the ability to create and file a theft report within the app. This include identifying data about your Mac, as well as all the key logs, screenshots and incriminating iSight shots Undercover takes.
Another killer feature that Apple’s Find my Mac can’t currently match, is Undercover’s dedicated recovery team. With locations worldwide, including the UK, Undercover’s recovery centre can advise you how best to proceed and put you in touch with the police when you’ve gathered enough data to track down your computer.
