The US Robotics 9113 Ndx Gateway is a par-for-the-course draft-n router.

However, several distinguishing features make the US Robotics 9113 Ndx Gateway stand out from the crowd – it incorporates an ADSL2+ modem, has a print server and a 'one-touch' security set-up.

It is Wi-Fi certified but only for 802.11b and g and not for draft-n. The US Robotics 9113 Ndx Gateway has the familiar trio of Mimo antennae but the middle one is on an extension cable, so you can adjust its position to improve reception.

The US Robotics 9113 Ndx Gateway tries to be user-friendly and the Secure Easy Setup certainly makes it a doddle to employ complex encryption keys. Working a bit like Buffalo's AOSS, you just press the respective buttons on each wireless device within two minutes and the encryption key is automatically generated and set.

However, beyond that the main user interface (UI), while ticking all the techie buttons, doesn't score highly on the ease of use front. The US Robotics 9113 Ndx Gateway does have good support for Virtual Private Networks but you'll have to shell out and pay a subscription in order to take advantage of VPNs (virtual private networks) in this device.

Like other USR Wi-Fi routers, the US Robotics 9113 Ndx Gateway can also serve as a print server, thus making it easy to share a printer on a network without requiring a PC to be powered up.

This is compensation for the fact that the 9113 only has four Fast Ethernet wired ports and not the more desirable Gigabit ports. Another gotcha: the US Robotics 9113 Ndx Gateway does support Wi-Fi Multimedia, which is good. But turn this on and it'll turn off draft-n. Not so good.

OUR VERDICT

The US Robotics 9113 Ndx Gateway is a reasonably-priced, reasonably specified draft-n router that's probably best-suited to those with a bit of network experience under their belts. A solid but lacklustre performer.
