The increasingly prevalence of wireless networks offers a huge boost to productivity. But with such freedom comes increased vulnerability – especially as large numbers of wireless networks (particularly those in the home) still aren't secured.

So Edimax's Wi-Fi signal detector could prove rather invaluable. One flick of the power switch and the EW-7317LDg instantly starts scanning for nearby signals. If there are any wireless networks within range, you can get details: most importantly, whether they are secured or not. You can also check on the type of network and which channel they're working on, and a power indicator shows you how strong the signal is.

The signal detector doubles up as a USB 2.0 802.11g adapter, so having found all the available wireless networks, you can use the Edimax to device to connect to the one with the strongest signal.

OUR VERDICT

At £40, this won't be an impulse buy for the average user, but it is an excellent means of checking whether your network is secure and improving the signal. If you need to buy an adapter anyway and don’t mind paying a few extra pounds, the Edimax should prove a wise acquisition.
