The D-Link DSL-2740R is an updated version of the successful DSL-2740B wireless router.

Externally, not much has changed. The D-Link DSL-2740R is a little smaller, although still larger than the smallest of the competing products. Unlike some of the other routers here, the D-Link's three adjustable antennae are fixed in place, rather than detachable meaning you can't replace them with higher-gain versions to achieve greater range.

Internally, the D-Link DSL-2740R's features are almost the same as on its predecessor. You get pretty standard firewall features and some handy prioritisation options that allow you to ensure you can always surf the web or play your games, even when large downloads are in progress. Missing however are family oriented functions such as parental controls and website logging.

Straightforward setup software makes the router easy to configure for first use and Windows Protected Setup (WPS) has been added to simplify the process of connecting new PCs to the network. The D-Link DSL-2740R also has a quick guide printed on the bottom of the unit, along with the default network settings which can be retrieved by pressing the reset switch.

At £80 the D-Link DSL-2740R is far from expensive, but it'll still cost you more than competing products from Linksys and Trendnet. It's also a little bulkier than both of these budget models. At this price you still don't get useful advanced features such as USB storage or printer sharing and you certainly won't be getting the more esoteric stuff offered by the high-end models just as VoIP, or 3G support.

However, we were impressed by the performance we got from the D-Link DSL-2740R. The DSL-2740R achieved a connection speed of 92Mbps in the near test, which is considerably faster than the previous model. While this short range test result was excellent, the most dramatic improvement was over longer distances. We recorded 36Mbps in this second test which is roughly six times the performance of the DSL-2740B under similar conditions.

Previously, D-Link has offered an eleven year warranty on wireless routers, so it's a shame to see this slashed to a more typical two years on the D-Link DSL-2740R.

OUR VERDICT

The D-Link DSL-2740R offers very good performance and is great for people who want to manage their internet bandwidth, but not so good for family use as it lacks any form of parental controls.
