The AVM FritzBox Fon 7270 is much more than just a featured-packed wireless router.

By adding a slew of highly specified VoIP functions, in the AVM FritzBox Fon 7270 AVM has created a fully featured telephony system capable of integrating your standard phone line with internet-based calls as well as providing voicemail and fax capabilities.

It also supports dual band Wi-Fi. This means the AVM FritzBox Fon 7270 can broadcast not only on the more common 2.4GHz band used by most wireless networks, but also on the 5GHz band. If you're suffering from a lot of wireless ‘congestion', you may find switching over to 5GHz will move your network out of the way of any interference from your neighbours.

The AVM FritzBox Fon 7270 base unit is fitted with a USB port which can be used for a variety of purposes, including sharing a printer or USB storage over your network, effectively turning the router in to a basic NAS server. AVM also releases regular firmware updates which often add entirely new features.

For all of these features, you do have to pay a little more. At £179, the FritzBox Fon 7270 costs around double what you'd pay for a Linksys WAG160N or a Trendnet TEW-635BRM, both of which are quite capable of fulfilling most users' needs. It also lacks 3G support, although this is promised in a future firmware release.

However, if you're handy with VoIP, you can use the AVM FritzBox Fon 7270 to make considerable savings and, if you work from home, you can set up different telephone numbers and extensions and even connect up multiple DECT handsets using the router as a base unit.

In our tests, the FritzBox Fon 7270 wasn't the fastest performer - in our short range test it averaged 60Mbps (Megabits per second) throughput. However, when we tested over a longer distance, it managed to deliver 29Mbps, beating most of the competition.
