The DrayTek Vigor 120 is an unusual but potentially very useful device - an ethernet ADSL and ADSL2+ modem only, unencumbered with wireless connections

It’s rare to find a single-function modem these days. Most such devices, whether supplied by your ISP or bought yourself later as an upgrade, include a wireless router too.

So the DrayTek Vigor 120 is a simple ADSL modem with a single ethernet port,  also specified for faster ADSL2+ broadband operation. It could be used in conjunction with a separate WiFi router for distributing your internet connection among laptops and wireless devices.

Or the DrayTek Vigor 120 can serve to supplement an existing modem router - either as a failover solution in businesses that have a second line; or used alongside a second modem in a load-balancing configuration, to maintain throughput on a network that may have many users connected simultaneously.

In this way, a DrayTek Vigor 120 can work as a partner for dual-WAN products such as DrayTek’s 2820 wireless router. Or you could simply use two of these Vigor 120 modems into a dual-WAN firewall such as DrayTek’s Vigor 2950 unit.

Setup is through the usual web browser interface, although we did see an issue configuring in OS X with Safari and Firefox, with page sidebars not rendered. Opera worked okay here though.

OUR VERDICT

For either very simple non-wireless setups, or very advanced load-balancing and failover installations for business, the DrayTek Vigor 120 is a good choice.
