The attractive Toshiba Portege R400-106 ultraportable tablet laptop comes with a sparkling white chassis (wonder where they got that idea from?), with a shiny Toshiba logo on the lid.

It's also very tactile, as the Toshiba Portege R400-106 is extremely small and light, at just 304x239x29.5mm and 1.7kg.

By losing the bulk, you will also have to forgo an optical drive, which could prove frustrating even in these heavily networked times. The Toshiba Portege R400-106 also lacks a large hard drive – it comes with just 80GB of storage space - and a large screen. Instead the Toshiba Portege R400-106 sports a 12.in display with a top resolution of 1,280x800 and the screen is powered by the Intel 945GM Express chipset.

So you are paying rather a lot for style over substance, as the pretty Toshiba Portege R400-106 subnotebook sports a price tag of just under £1,300.

It's not all bad new though as the Toshiba Portege R400-106 does shine in other areas. It is packed with security features to keep you precious data safe, including a fingerprint reader that means only you can access the hard drive.

The Toshiba Portege R400-106 also functions as a tablet PC, so you can twist the lid to sit on top of the keyboard and enter data direct to the screen, which probably explains the high price for such a low spec laptop.

The attractive Toshiba Portege R400-106 ultraportable tablet laptop comes with a sparkling white chassis (wonder where they got that idea from?), with a shiny Toshiba logo on the lid.

It also comes with a comprehensive software bundle, including all you will need to work with it as a tablet PC, plus lots of Toshiba utilities for watching and, ironically, creating DVDs.

The Toshiba Portege R400-106's trackpad is small, making it awkward to use and as it's white, it will soon become discoloured. Perhaps Toshiba should take another leaf out of Apple's book and change it to a more greasy-finger-friendly grey.

When it comes to performance the scores are as small as the Toshiba Portege R400-106's footprint. It's 1.2GHz Intel Core Duo U2500 processor twinned with 2GB of DDR RAM turned in a Worldbench 6 score of just 47 – lower than the £399 Samsung R60, our current Best Buy sub-£800 laptop.

As for graphics, they were as bad as you would expect from the Toshiba Portege R400-106's integrated graphics card. In the Company of Heroes test the best the R400 could manage was an unplayable 1.6 frames per second (fps), and in the FEAR test it 'leapt' up to 2fps, both at a resolution of 1,024x768.

OUR VERDICT

The Toshiba Portege R400-106 is certainly sophisticated, both in terms of looks and functionality. If you want a tablet PC this is probably one of the most attractive you'll find, it's light, well built and highly secure, but when it comes to the performance, price ratio it doesn't come out on top.
