The Kingston DataTraveler BlackBox is a rugged and waterproof drive that looks pretty impressive at the outset. It has the look and feel of a military device and isn't targeted at ordinary consumers. This drive doesn't provide the myriad options of the Transcend JetFlash 220 but, as a drive dedicated to secure data protection, it's hard to beat.

This is the only drive in our group test to come with Federal Information Processing Standards (FIPS) 140-2 Level 2 certification (US), which is a standard set by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST). Each time the Kingston DataTraveler BlackBox is plugged in, it runs a power-on self test to verify that the encryption architecture is functioning and to check that its tamper-proof seal is intact. The drive also features 256bit AES encryption and is protected through a powerful-password authentication system that forces the user to create a strong password combination.

The degree of security the Kingston DataTraveler BlackBox provides can be gauged from the fact that the drive will be automatically formatted and all the data will be destroyed after 10 consecutive failed password attempts.

In our speed and performance tests, the Kingston DataTraveler BlackBox was second only to the Sandisk Extreme Cruzer Contour. It features read speeds up to 24 megabits per second (Mbps) and write speeds up to 20Mbps.
