While some of the other USB flash drives we tested have featured a stylish exterior, the Freecom DataBar is a fairly plain black stick in contrast, with a blue LED that flashes when the drive is in use.

The Freecom USB 2.0 DataBar is priced at £2.81 per GB, the cheapest price per GB of all the flash drives we've looked at recently. We were also impressed with the software that it was bundled with.

Although it was only a 30-day trial of Carry it Easy, we were able to take a portable version of our Outlook Express email client on the Freecom DataBar with us, as well as synchronising our My Documents folder and favourite web pages so they would be used on any PC.

Compatible with Windows 2000, XP and Vista as well as Mac OS X, the 16GB Freecom DataBar that we tested performed very well, achieving an average read speed of 30.95 megabytes per second (MBps) and write speed of 12.20MBps.
