Sony SRS-T10PC compensate for the lacklustre speakers that condemn most laptops to a lifetime of canned audio and abysmal bass reproduction.

Modern laptops may be mostly perfectly constructed for any number of everyday PC tasks (spreadsheets, word processing, internet surfing etc), but two areas where they still tend to fall down are games and audio. Sony’ SRS-T10PC can’t do anything about poor graphics performance, but it certainly can compensate for the lacklustre speakers that condemn most laptops to a lifetime of canned audio and abysmal bass reproduction.

The Sony SRS-T10PC is a portable speaker system that plugs straight into the USB port. It draws power from the port itself, so you won’t need to worry about batteries, and its wonderful plug-and-play installation means it takes just a few seconds for you to have it up and whirring on virtually any machine.

The protective lid doubles up as a stand, so you can quickly position the Sony SRS-T10PC almost anywhere you like. It’s a shame there’s no volume control, and although it’s little trouble to adjust the settings on the laptop itself, a physical volume control would have added to the convenience.

Obviously, given the size, you’re not going to get ground-thumping audio reproduction from the Sony SRS-T10PC - indeed, the bass is still slightly lacking – but the sound is certainly a significant improvement over that of that of the average notebook. You can push it up to some good volumes as well, although there is inevitably a little hissing at the higher levels.

OUR VERDICT

It’s compact, it’s convenient, and it works fairly well. The Sony SRS-T10PC speaker system is still a long way from musical paradise, but for those occasions when you want to turn up the volume, and you only have your laptop for company, you’ll be pleased to have it sitting around.
