Auralog TellMeMore 10 is language-learning software that combines ease of use with copious amounts of learning material. We tested the '5 Levels' starter and mid-level kit, that retails for £299.

That price tag may sound a lot, but Auralog TellMeMore 10 5 Levels can be broadly compared to Rosetta Stone Level 1, 2 & 3, which will set you back £379.

Elsewhere, the comparison to Rosetta fails to flatter Auralog TellMeMore 10. TellMeMore is not as visually appealing as Rosetta Stone, and doesn't have quite the same depth of material. Unlike its cross-platform rival, Auralog is Windows only. And although you get a microphone and headphone headset, this is a plasticky self-assembly kit that has none of the Rosetta equivalent's quality. But like the program itself it works, and that may be all that matters.

The many lessons in Auralog TellMeMore 10 involve listening, speaking, reading and writing. With the headset you can practise your pronunciation, and TellMeMore will listen back and appraise you of your progress.

Like RS, Auralog TellMeMore 10 gets you to create a user account, and will select a tailor made course for your required level. You can also cherry pick modules to complete, or take on individual tasks to shore up weak areas.

You can track your progress visually, and Auralog TellMeMore 10 tells you the percentage of each task that you have completed. This is not as good as Rosetta Stone, which tells you how long each lesson will take, but is intuitive none the less.

Auralog TellMeMore 10 remembers where you left off and lets you carry on from the same place. The standard starts at very basic, but will take you a long way toward fluency in a given language. The levels-based approach helps here - you can purchase individual levels to suit your ability as you learn.

One quibble we did have was in the size of the lessons, some of which are miniscule. It is satisfying to tick off each one, but some 'lessons' contain only a single comprehension question. Unlike even low-end products such as Berlitz Spanish Premier, there are no add-ons such as audio CDs and flash cards. And Auralog has products in only a handful of major languages.

OUR VERDICT

Auralog TellMeMore 10 Spanish is not without flaws, and it is an expensive product without bells and whistles. But if you are committed to learning a language TellMeMore works out cheaper than Rosetta Stone. Although the latter is a superior product, the difference may not be so great as to make Auralog's software a bad purchase. Easy to use and relatively cheap, there is sufficient material here to become proficient in your chosen language, but you may not enjoy the experience as much as you would Rosetta Stone 1, 2 & 3.
