HP's £199 Photosmart 475 delivers easy printing and picture storage on the go, and several unique features make it more flexible than its sibling, the Photosmart 375, and rival portable printers. Print quality doesn't match a lot of the competition, and the price tag is offputting, but this is still a good buy.

The biggest news is the addition of a 1.5GB hard drive for storing photos. The unit has four media-card slots and a PictBridge-compatible port. A USB connection allows you to transfer images to and from a PC.

The device's other major upgrade is its ability to print borderless 5x7in prints, in addition to 4x6in. Our test prints at both sizes showed rich colours, but the 475 uses the same print engine and ink system as the 375, and suffers from the same lack of detail - not to mention a definite grain running through the pictures.

The 2.5in colour display on top flips up for editing images. The front panel folds down to hold outputted pages, while the rear one pulls back to reveal an input tray that holds 20 sheets. You can connect the unit to a TV and use the remote control to present a slideshow, during which you can print any shot, and for more portability, you can buy a rechargeable battery or car power adapter. No printer beats the 475 for sheer versatility.

Printing times are just below average for a portable. That said, this is rarely an issue for this category. Photo-sized prints took about 105 seconds in best mode, which was only 10 seconds slower than HP's claimed print speed of 95 seconds.

OUR VERDICT

If the image quality were better, we wouldn't hesitate to offer the Photosmart 475 a Gold award. It's attractive and fully functional, and had some interesting features that are sure to come to the attention of the competition.
