The name Lexmark is not usually top of the agenda when discussing brands associated with high-quality inkjet printers, so its latest MFD (multifunction device) – the X5470 – came as something of a surprise.

It has an attractive, robust design, and scores well for specifications and functionality. The X5470 is aimed squarely at the business market, and is equipped accordingly. It features fax, ADF (automatic document feeder) and memory card slots.

But while we were impressed by the design and features, the Lexmark was more predictable on print performance. The firm has never managed to match the output quality of Epson and Canon's printers, and the X5470 was no exception.

Sharpness and clarity were passable for mono output, so the X5470 will do for printing letters and other documents. But at just under 3ppm (pages per minute) in standard print mode, it might struggle for speed in an office environment.

Colour output was washed-out and grainy, both on plain paper and specialist media, meaning that the MFD's memory card slots and colour copying functionality are a bit of a waste of time. A full-page A4 photo on glossy paper took a little over four minutes to print – not painfully slow, but nowhere near as fast as many other printers in this class.

Scanning performance was better. An A4 page took just over 30 seconds to scan, and image quality and colour balance were very good.

As an all-round business product, the X5470 has some clear plus points. Fax functionality is good: the control panel is easy to use, and there are some good bonus features, such as a 99-entry phone book. The inclusion of an ADF is also welcome, as this means you can fax – and scan to your computer – multi-page documents.

OUR VERDICT

The Lexmark X5470 is a winner when it comes to build quality and simple, functional design. It's just a shame that print quality and speed aren't up to par with the rest of its features – otherwise we'd have had a genuinely top-notch MFD on our hands.
