Canon’s Pixma printers always provide good quality and performance, but the 5-colour printing system used in many models means that their running costs can be quite high. The new Canon Pixma MX435 is an attempt to rectify that problem and provide an affordable yet versatile multifunction printer for home office users. The wireless MX435 includes printing, scanning, copying and fax features, as well as a 30-sheet document feeder, so it covers all the bases for home workers. Its 4800x1200dpi resolution produces very good results for text and graphics documents, and its performance is also quite good for such an inexpensive printer. We got a very respectable 9 pages per minute for text documents, and a more modest 3ppm for colour, although that should still be perfectly adequate for most home workers. Photo printing is good too. We did detect slight banding when printing photos on plain paper, but better quality photo paper eliminated that problem, and the MX435 was able to turn out attractive 4”x6” postcard prints in about 50 seconds.

Unlike some of the other Pixma models that we’ve reviewed recently, the MX435 uses just four coloured inks for printing, which helps to keep running costs down. Canon’s high-yield black cartridge costs about £18.50 and lasts for 600 pages, which works out at 3p per page for mono printing. The high-yield colour cartridge costs about £20 and lasts for 400 pages, giving a cost per page of 8p when printing mixed text and graphics documents (that’s 5p for the coloured ink plus 3p for black). Those aren’t the lowest prices we’ve ever seen, but they’re not too bad for a low-volume printer of this type.

Canon also rounds out the MX435 with a few useful extras, such as AirPrint so that you can print from an iPhone or iPad, and good software that includes options for printing calendars, photo albums and other types of document.

OUR VERDICT

The MX435 isn’t the fastest printer around, but its speed and quality are still good for a printer costing less than £80, and its range of additional features makes it a good choice for home workers who need a versatile, multifunctional office printer.
