Brother's DCP-585CW offers printing, scanning and copying as well as photo printing. First impressions of the Brother DCP-585CW are very good. It has a low profile design, making it seem leaner than its rivals.

The Brother DCP-585CW looks and feels the part, thanks to its silver and dark grey finish, rubberised buttons and a chrome four-way cursor control.

The standout feature is the widescreen colour LCD that makes it easy to access the Brother DCP-585CW's menus which, like the buttons that surround the screen, are easy to understand and logically laid out.

The Brother DCP-585CW has a combined input/output section at the front of the printer, with separate trays for A4 paper and 10 x 15cm photo paper.

The trays feel solid enough to withstand every day use at home, although the thin lid on the Brother DCP-585CW's scanner feels less robust. The four separate Innobella ink tanks (black, cyan, magenta and yellow) are located behind a flap to the printer's right and are easy to access and install.

Also arranged on the front are slots for a wide variety of flash memory cards, and a PictBridge socket. The Brother DCP-585CW includes both ethernet and 802.11g Wi-Fi connectivity, enabling it to be added to a home network.

All of this functionality comes at a cost: at £127.22, the Brother DCP-585CW is the most expensive printer here, although getting it all for a tenner more than the Epson Stylus SX400 makes it good value.

Output was slightly disappointing. Mono prints are deep grey rather than completely black and there is some feathering at character edges. Colour output with photos is better, although many prints had a washed-out look until we switched from Photo mode to the highest quality setting.

This slowed up printing considerably, with a single A4 photo print taking 9 minutes 20 seconds. Mono prints are also slow at 27 seconds per page. But our test prints were completely free of banding, and proved impervious to our water and scratch tests.

OUR VERDICT

The Brother DCP-585CW gets a lot of things right in build quality and ease of use. But it's an indifferent performer with mono prints and you pay a speed penalty with the highest-quality photo output.
