If your backup needs are modest and you're keen to ensure you regularly back up files even if you're on the road, the Samsung S1 Mini is one of the handiest, least obtrusive travelling companions you can choose.

Unlike the other models here, the Samsung S1 Mini is fitted with a 1.8in hard drive, allowing Samsung to create a far smaller backup device but with a big trade-off in price - miniaturisation is a fiddly and expensive process.

Arguably, however, a truly portable drive that weighs a mere 91g and can store 120GB of data is going to be at least as useful as a more capacious one, and is far more likely to make it along for the ride if luggage weight is an issue.

The Samsung S1 Mini's transfer speeds are on a par with other USB 2.0 drives, with burst speeds of up to 27MBps aided by the inclusion of a full fat 8MB cache.

The software bundle includes a SecretZone encrypted partition and an auto-backup utility, while Samsung throws in a carry pouch and both long and short USB cables.
