Freecom mHDD Slim 1TB review: Price

The drive is relatively expensive as a portable hard drive. At 9p per GB the Freecom mHDD Slim is relatively expensive for its storage size. The drive can be found in the UK for £85.99 on Freecom's website and on Amazon for the same price. Do note that prices fluctuate.

The drive comes in three stylish Apple-like colours: Space Grey, Silver and Gold. It can also be found in 1 and 2TB sizes.

Freecom mHDD Slim 1TB review: Features and design

The portable hard drive is very well built and has a beautiful brushed aluminium enclosure that really sets it apart from other drives in the market.

Despite being only 9mm thick, it does carry a weight of 150g. Nevertheless, with a length of 114mm and width of 76mm, the drive is very much pocketable.

The drive we received came was the 1TB variant, which is 931GB of real-world capacity.

Freecom mHDD Slim 1TB review - Windows

We were impressed by the large number of useful software bundled with the drive. Nero Backup Essentials is used for backing up files. Green button energy saver is used to reduce energy usage for when the drive is idle. Hard Drive Eraser and Formatter are as the names suggest - to wipe and format your portable drive securely. Also see: Best NAS drives.

Freecom mHDD Slim 1TB review - Software

We found all the software easy to use and programs which don't hog your system's memory. The installation process is also simple, unlike with other hard drive manufacturers that make you look for the software, Freecom have provided them all within the root directory of the hard drive.

Freecom mHDD Slim 1TB review: Performance

The Freecom mHDD Slim houses a hard disk that spins at 5400RPM, which in comparison to the likes of the Freecom Tablet Mini SSD performs a lot slower, due to it having a physical drive and not an SSD.

Nevertheless, for its storage size, the Freecom mHDD Slim has a very respectful sequential speed of 134.1MB/s read and 132.8MB/s write. This puts it in-line with other portable hard drives in the market, such as the Seagate Backup Plus Ultra Slim and Toshiba Canvio Connect II.

Freecom mHDD Slim 1TB review - Crystaldiskmark

Just like other portable drives in the market, the Freecom mHDD Slim has slow 4KB benchmark speeds of 0.6MB/s read and 1.4MB/s write. Making it slow for transferring smaller files. Therefore, the drive best performs with larger files.
