The Freecom Hard Drive XS is a compact and silent portable USB 2.0 hard drive offering good performance.

The Freecom Hard Drive XS is available with a one-terabyte (1TB), 1.5TB or 2TB capacity.

The rubber enclosure on the  Freecom Hard Drive XS not only provides it with an attractive and tactile finish but also absorbs a large amount of the noise produced by the drive itself. The design also means it feels more portable than most desktop drives.

The Freecom Hard Drive XS's transfer speeds are above average and even when working with large Photoshop or video files it always stayed fast and responsive. There is no bundled backup software. If you want to use Time Machine with an Apple Mac it will need reformatting in Disk Utility.

OUR VERDICT

We like the Freecom Hard Drive XS. The only real letdown is the password-protection feature, which over multiple attempts failed to recognise the drive in order to complete the setup. As a backup solution or working hard drive, this unassumingly stylish product would otherwise suit most people, although you are paying slightly more for the slimmed-down design.
