If you can't stand the thought of a PC that's larger than a one-volume encyclopedia, ViewSonic's VOT530 is one of the speedier compact alternatives.

If you can't stand the thought of a PC that's larger than a one-volume encyclopedia, ViewSonic's VOT530 is one of the speedier compact alternatives.

The ViewSonic VOT530 runs on an Intel Core 2 Duo T6600 CPU clocked at 2.2GHz. Only 2GB of DDR2-800 memory sits in the VOT530's miniature frame, a somewhat stingy amount given what you'll find in comparable systems at a similar cost. And the VOT530's WorldBench 6 real-world speed score of 72 is excellent - for its price and form.

This score doesn't compare with traditional desktop PCs at this price point by any stretch of the imagination. Systems in our budget PC charts offer a lot more power than the ViewSonic VOT530 if you don't need something quite so compact.

The ViewSonic VOT530 delivers a less-than-stellar variety of support for external devices. You get six USB 2.0 ports, a gigabit ethernet port, an eSATA port and a DVI connector. There's no card reader but we were pleased to see a slot-loading DVD+/-RW drive and a 320GB hard drive.

You can't upgrade any part of the ViewSonic VOT530, as is the case with most systems of such compact size. Neither are a mouse or keyboard bundled. Wireless 802.11b/g/n networking is built-in, and two antennae let you maximise your connection quality and range over competing antenna-in-the-chassis systems.

OUR VERDICT

ViewSonic's VOT530 is a Windows 7 Home Premium system that gives you excellent performance for its miniature size. But if you don't mind stepping up in size, you can get a lot more bang for you buck elsewhere.
