When Rock sent us specifications for the Pegasus T4, we took the claimed battery life of seven hours with a pinch of salt, as we always do. Notebook batteries rarely last as long as the vendors reckon. So we weren't surprised when the T4 conked out after five hours and one minute.

Then again, it's a damn sight closer to the mark than most of the T4's rivals get. And it's a good result, too - only a handful of notebooks that we've seen have lasted longer than this in the MobileMark 2002 tests.

A 1.7GHz Intel Pentium M 735 processor coupled with a 14in 1,280x768 TFT display prove to be very gentle on the battery - good news for people who don't want to rely on AC power.

Even better news is that the T4 weighs only 2.5kg, so your arms won't ache even if you're carrying it around all day.
The 512MB of DDR RAM keeps everything ticking along nicely. The Pegasus managed 74 points in our WorldBench 5 tests, which is by no means outstanding, but respectable enough.

The 40GB hard drive isn't overly generous - Rock could probably have opted for more and still kept the price under £900 - but an NEC ND-6500A dual-layer DVD writer provides excellent backup.

Though the display is a widescreen, we found the colours rather dull and the overall image quality a little disappointing. With just an onboard graphics controller, the T4 isn't suited to playing games, although the aspect ratio gives it an edge when it comes to DVD movies.

OUR VERDICT

The Pegasus T4 came close to winning a Gold award but didn't quite manage it, mainly due to the poor screen and onboard graphics. The battery life is impressive and it's very portable; the warranty is better than most, too.
