The CyberPower Ultra Scylla SE has opted for AMD’s quad-core 4.2GHz FX-4170 processor and, although it has by far the fastest clock speed, it costs almost 50% less than an Intel Core 15-3570K. See also Group test: What's the best family PC.

Update: CyberPower is launching an updated version of this PC. See our CyberPower Ultra Scylla SE (MKII) review.

Thankfully, its performance is considerably better than half as good. With a score of 132 points in our WorldBench 6 benchmark, the Ultra Scylla SE falls some way behind the Intel-powered competition, but it’s still perfectly powerful enough for a decent family PC. Take a look at Chillblast Fusion Longbow review too.

An AMD Radeon HD 7770 graphics card is also included, which is the same model used by many of the Intel-based systems, but sadly gaming performance is often held back by the processor resulting in around 25% less performance in our Crysis gaming test. Visit Arbico eXcel i5256 VX review.

Keep in mind though that this PC costs around £100 less than some of its rivals, yet it includes a 24in LCD monitor, a set of Logitech S220 speakers with a subwoofer, a built-in card reader, webcam and Wi-Fi wireless networking. You also get a Blu-ray reader as standard and a three-year labour warranty. So if you don’t need the extra performance of an Intel-based PC, the Ultra Scylla SE will provide a great all-round package for less.

The black Cooler Master Elite 430 system case houses an Asus M5A78L-M motherboard which offers a pair of USB 3.0 ports, along with four USB 2.0, but there’s little room for expansion other than the pair of empty memory slots which would allow you to double up the supplied RAM to 16GB.

Like most of our family PCs the Ultra Scylla SE comes with 1TB of hard disk storage, but here no SSD is included. Wi-Fi support is provided by a small card, plugged into the motherboard, which is neater than Chillblast’s USB solution and allows for a decent-sized antenna to be fitted.
