This sparkler from Cube247 is the most expensive offering in our AMD vs Intel round-up. There's a £550 gap between this system and the Mesh Titan 5000 PPX. But if you're expecting the gap to be explained by the Mesh having an inferior chip, you'd be wrong – both share AMD's 5000+.

In fact, the Cube247's real trump card is its 4GB of DDR RAM. Now, some may query whether 4GB is really needed, and it's true that, in today's market, this amount of RAM could seem like overkill. However, a future of 64bit computing and dual-core applications will probably benefit immeasurably from the extra RAM. It means that the maximum speed is coaxed from the Athlon processor, and the resulting WorldBench score of 136 is pleasingly high – a healthy 10 points above that of the Mesh.

This extra memory also seems to be a factor in propelling the Cube247 to higher frame rates in our games testing, and a faster score in video tests. Certainly, the Mesh has the fastest graphics card (although the Cube247's 7900 GTX is still the second fastest on the market), but it's only in Fear that the Mesh's graphics chip shows its finesse – and then only at higher resolutions.

As with the Mesh, the sound system is fantastic. The GNR isn't the most luxurious of 19in flat-panels, though, and we would prefer the Mesh's ViewSonic screen. The Cube247's software bundle and DVD writer are both very good.

OUR VERDICT

While the Cube247 may be faster than the Mesh Titan 5000 PPX, we can't help but feel that the performance gap isn't high enough to compensate for the huge £550 price difference. If you're in the market for an Athlon system, the Mesh would still be first choice.
