At £669.99, CCL’s Elite Raven is a relatively cheap family PC. This system costs less than any other family PC we've reviewed this month. However, it’s also less powerful than most and lacks speakersWi-Fi and an SSD all of which would bring it closer in price to its competition. If you don’t need these features, then it’s a great value system in a compact case. See also Group test: What's the best family PC.

Despite its low cost, it still turns in decent performance, thanks to a 3.1GHz Intel Core i5-3450 processor which offers the same quad-core processing of the Core i5-3570 and Core i5-3570K, but at a slightly slower speed. The Elite Raven managed a score of 161 points in WorldBench 6, which is more than adequate for most family use. Take a look at Chillblast Fusion Longbow review too.

Furthermore, the system includes an AMD Radeon HD 7770 graphics card, enabling gaming graphics almost as fast as the most expensive PCs in this round-up. Visit Arbico eXcel i5256 VX review.

There’s no room in the budget for a solid-state drive, and you don’t get extras such as Wi-Fi or a webcam, but CCL has included a 24in monitor and a Blu-ray drive. No speakers have been included, but for around £25 you can add a Logitech S220 set as found in many other PCs in this month’s chart.

The system uses a Gigabyte GA-H61MA-D2V v2.0 motherboard which uses Intel’s H61 Express Chipset. This lacks some of the features of newer chipsets such as the B75 Express – SATA 6Gbps for example – but Gigabyte has added support for USB 3.0 and PCI Express 3.0. This means you get a perfectly capable PC, but at a lower cost. Although this precise version of the motherboard hasn’t received Windows 8 certification, hardware revision v2.1 of the board has and has an identical specification.

If your space is tight, you’ll appreciate CCL’s case as the smallest of the group, although it’s certainly not the most impressive on offer. There’s no cable management inside, but the 450W XFX power supply comes with meshed cables which CCL has neatly arranged with cable ties.

OUR VERDICT

The CCL Elite Raven less powerful than your average family PC and vitally lacks powerful speakers, Wi-Fi and an SSD which would bring it closer in price to the competition. If you don’t need these features, then it’s a great value system in a compact case.
