This is the first release of Ulead's video-editing software package since the company was bought by Corel. Ulead VideoStudio 11.0 Plus increases HD capabilities with plenty of features designed to make creating and editing high definition movies easier.

Ulead VideoStudio 11.0 Plus supports AVCHD (Advanced Video Coding HD), which allows HD content to consume less storage space. And if you have a disk- or hard drive-based AVCHD camcorder, you can now import and edit footage from it.

Support is offered for H.264 or AVC compression, and output can be created using two profiles: Baseline, which is for mobile applications and videoconferencing, and Main, which is reserved for broadcast quality. Assuming your PC is up to the job, you can edit HD movies and record them to DVD or HD-DVD using Ulead VideoStudio 11.0 Plus.

There's plenty to attract less technical users to Ulead VideoStudio 11.0 Plus, too. New Movie Wizard templates allow you to make your own personalised movie style intros and there are improved auto correction options. There's a host of extra subtitling options, and VideoStudio will automatically date and time stamp HD footage. It even offers Unicode language support for non-standard characters.

There are still three main ways to create a movie using Ulead VideoStudio 11.0 Plus: Editor for more advanced users; Wizard for beginners and DV-to-DVD to take footage directly from camera to disc. The interface is much the same as before, clear and relatively easy to navigate – although it's still pretty confusing for a novice to master.

You also get a plain version of Ulead VideoStudio 11.0. This offers many of the same features as Ulead VideoStudio 11.0 Plus, but it doesn’t include HD support or Dolby Digital 5.1.

OUR VERDICT

Version 11.0 brings VideoStudio up to date with the latest technology and adds a few useful features, and it still offers good value for money when compared to the competition. A necessary upgrade.
