Xerox Phaser 3610 review

Two words neatly sum up the appeal of the new Xerox Phaser 3610 - volume and speed. Created for small to medium size offices that are less concerned with whistles and bells than keeping the pistons pumping, this is a solid and efficient workhorse for the workplace. See all mono printer reviews.

We examined the basic model that comes in the traditional Xerox dark blue and cream colours, weighs a chunky 13kg and occupies a broadly square footprint measuring 393 x 426 x 315mm. It feels strong, sturdy and reliable. See also Best Printer 2013.

Paper capacity consists of a base input tray that holds 550 sheets of A4 and a drop-down multipurpose tray at the front that supplements with a further 150 sheets. An additional three optional trays (at £205.20 each) can be attached to make a whopping total of 2,350 sheets - more than sufficient for most daily office demands.

In keeping with the simplicity of design and function, the Phaser 3610 has an equally stripped-down control panel that is built in to the left side of the cover. It uses a brightly back-lit two line text display alongside a control wheel and four buttons for power, menu, return and control. It's easy to use but as it does involve a fair amount of scrolling, we recommend printing off the menu guide first.

If automatic two-sided printing is a priority for your company, then you'll need to upgrade to the 3610DN model where it comes as standard. Wi-Fi is also unavailable on the base unit unless you purchase an extra attachment for around £111 - this will also allow you to perform mobile printing with Apple AirPrint and Xerox PrintBack. Ethernet connectivity, however, is offered on all versions as well as single PC link via USB.

The Phaser 3610's outstanding virtue is undoubtedly its speed - averaging 40 ppm with standard A4 documents. The ink quality is also impressive - no signs of feathering or blurring, just clean solid blacks. We particularly liked the good contrast and definition on pictures and graphics up to 1200 x 1200 dpi resolution.

Depending on the size of your output needs, the black toner cartridges come in three capacities - Standard (5900 pages at 2.47p per page), High (14,100 pages at 1.77p per page) and Extra High (25,300 pages at 1.32p per page). The latter is especially attractive if you're going to make use of all the extra input trays.

OUR VERDICT

If your business has a work-team of up to 10 users who value speed, volume and good quality mono printing, then the Xerox Phaser 3610 is one to consider, despite the absence of duplex in the starter unit.
